Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee or just IIT Roorkee was earlier known as the University of Roorkee and Thomason College of Civil Engineering. It is a public engineering university situated in the beautiful area of Roorkee, Uttrakhand, India. Established by British India in 1847 by the then lieutenant governor, Sir James Thomason, it was since given its now held university status in 1949 and was converted into an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to be made into “Institute of nation’s importance” in 2001, thus becoming the nation’s seventh IIT to be created. The institute originally started its classes in 1845 to educate local youth about engineering and make them be able to assist in public works.

IIT Roorkee has 21 divergent academic departments that covers subjects such as Humanities, Applied Sciences, Engineering & Social Sciences and Management programs with a strong prominence on technological and scientific education and research. The School of Paper Technology established by the Government of India was subsequently renamed as the Department of Paper Technology in July 1992.

Campus Details

The main campus of Roorkee is spread over an area of 365 acres (1,480,000 m2).IIT Roorkee has a campus of 25 acres (100,000 m2) in Saharanpur which provides courses in Paper Technology & Packaging Technology, Polymer Science, and Process Engineering. Furthermore, a brand-new ten-acre campus has been established in Greater Noida, Knowledge Park II, which was established on 4 April 2011. The Noida campus has in total 16 lecture rooms, faculty offices, software laboratories, a library, and a computer center. Most of the students live in the student hostels, where the academic routine is complimented by the extra-curricular activities. The campus has in total 16 hostels, of which two are occupied by girls.

College Ranking

IIT Roorkee was among only three IITs to be featured in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2012-13, the latest league table of the world’s top 400 universities. As per the very recent study conducted by NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) 2018 to rank Indian institutes based on their merits the report has found that, IIT Roorkee is the 6th best Engineering Institution in India with a score of 72.57, which is left behind by IIT Madras (88.95), IIT Bombay (84.82), IIT Delhi (82.18), IIT Kharagpur (77.78), IIT Kanpur (75.24) in the top 5 ranks.
