• Plant Products

The food products that we get from plants are called plant products such as a potato is the stem

• Animal Products

The food products that we get from animals are called animal products such as milk, butter, chicken, meat, honey etc. The meat of animals like chicken, fish, and prawns is commonly eaten.

What Do Animals Eat?

Different animals have different feeding habits. Based on their feeding habits, animals can be divided into three groups: Herbivores, Carnivores, and Omnivores.

• Herbivores

Animals that feed on plants are called Herbivores.

E.g., cow, goat etc.

Characteristics of Herbivores

1. Herbivores like cows, horses, and goats have wide, blunt teeth. Such teeth are suitable for pulling plants off the ground and grinding them.
2. Herbivores like cows and camels can bring back previously swallowed food to the mouth for chewing it the second time. This helps them to absorb most of the nutrients from hard-to-digest food like grass.
3. Herbivores like butterflies and hummingbirds do not need to worry about chewing their food. They have mouthparts shaped like a straw to suck nectar from flowers.

• Carnivores

Animals that feed on other animals are called Carnivores.

E.g., lion, tiger etc.

Characteristics of Carnivores

1. Carnivores like lions and tigers have sharp and pointed front teeth (canines). They also have sharp claws and powerful jaws that help them to tear flesh.
2. Carnivorous birds like eagles have curved, pointed beaks that allow them to tear flesh.
3. Carnivores like chameleons and frogs have long, sticky tongues that they use to catch insects.

• Omnivores

Animals that feed on both plants and other animals are called Omnivores.

E.g., bears. They feed on flesh as well as honey.

Characteristics of Omnivores

1. Omnivores like bears and human beings have different types of teeth that help them to eat both plants and the flesh of other animals.
2. Omnivorous birds like crows have sharp and pointed beaks to help them eat a variety of food.
