Learning Loss

An important step in everyone’s growth curve is through effective learning.

Learning covers the core of academics. It is important so that all the tasks can be performed efficiently and without any loss.

Learning Loss And Unfinished Learning

Consistency is key to success and the same goes with knowledge as well. But what if discontinuity happens or a student is not able to master the subject, he/she wants to? What are the consequences and how to come out of this fatal situation? In today’s blog, we will discuss learning loss and unfinished learning, their consequences, and strategies to address them.

Let us understand the basic difference between the two to avoid any sort of confusion.

Learning loss: It is better to understand this with the help of an example. Suppose a student A is unable to attend school/coaching due to some personal problem for say, 30 days. Then definitely loss of knowledge and skills will be there. This situation is called Learning loss.

Multiple reasons can be because of learning loss. Some of them include:

  • Vacations: As the name suggests, students take studies for granted on vacations and this can be a prime cause for loss of knowledge.
  • Absence from School: It can be because of family functions, illness, etc.

Unfinished learning: This educational term defines a situation where students were in the process of learning/mastering the subject but left it in between due to certain conditions or they never got a chance to explore the subject.

The reasons for unfinished learning can be:

  • Lack of Sources: Mostly this happens in rural areas with clustered settlements. Improper Technology, Infrastructure, etc. can play a major role in unfinished learning.
  • Other reasons can be financial instability, lack of interest, etc.

For example, the Current Covid situation can very well relate to unfinished learning as learning is incomplete but still in progress.

Researches have shown that these two are greater in areas with low-income ratio and the subject that becomes the reason is mathematics. However, learning loss and unfinished learning are not good practices and should be evacuated for the developmental process. For this to happen, certain strategies are needed which we will be discussing in the below-mentioned points:

  •  Learning in vacations: Summer vacations are given in every academic year to students. One should not waste them and instead, utilize them for something productive. Depending upon your budget, multiple learning programs are available. Many schools also offer various skills development programs like Music, Dance, Personality development, Programming, etc but mostly these are paid ones. Some organizations and platforms also offer free-of-cost initiatives for students to learn and upgrade their skills. It is not at all compulsory to send your child outside for learning as it can be done at your house also with the help of the Internet and other probes.
  • Game-based Learning: There is an availability of smartphones and other screens in almost every house nowadays. Children spend most of their time using different screens like a laptop, Pc, etc. It implies that we can increase their engagement in the learning process with the help of technology. It does not require anything special apart from gaming software. No-no by gaming we do not mean conventional e-games instead, educational games. Numerous gaming software’s are available in the market and if you don’t wish to purchase one, they are also available online. Such games not only promote learning but also teach teamwork, decision-making, and most importantly, problem-solving.
  • Directional learning: Also termed as target-based learning, this learning is student-oriented and most effective when it comes to the teaching process. Directional learning can be implemented with the help of a tutor or a mentor who is exclusively appointed for around 1-2 students only so that he/she can closely examine the strengths as well as weaknesses. Such tutors need to be certified to prevent unfinished learning. Multiple platforms such as ours, SpeEdLabs, are working in this direction to provide personalized performance learning plans for each student.
  • Strong bonding: Global Pandemic has affected many children in terms of family relationships causing Anxiety, Depression, Panic attack, etc. Not only learning is interrupted, but loneliness has also developed. Hence, it becomes important for parents to support their growing children and this can be done by organizing family meets, get together, etc. Students should also be encouraged for various hobbies like reading, writing, poetry, etc. Strong relationships provide a base for effective learning and guides students towards the right direction by motivating them. As a parent, you can also take help from teachers, classmates etc.

Key Takeaways

The younger generation needs support in terms of learning and it’s the duty of parents as well as teachers to support them. Learning is not constant; it evolves with time and one must put effort and dedicate proper time to move forward in the learning process.
