ICSE CLASS 10: AN OVERVIEW

ICSE Class 10 is paramount to a student’s academic career. It is considered to be the groundwork for further studies. It might give nightmares to some students as this is their first attempt at a national-level exam. Passing the Class 10 ICSE exams with good marks opens doors to new opportunities. Since the marks obtained in Class 10 serve as the criteria for admissions by many schools, the examination holds high importance for every student.

The ICSE (Indian Council of Secondary Education) Board exams for class 10 are conducted by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations. The syllabus for class 10 is quite vast and detailed. Emphasis is given on the application of the concepts learned rather than rote-learning of the concepts. The topics are such that they prepare a student well for the rigorous studies of Classes 11 and 12 and competitive exams like JEE and NEET.

ICSE Class 10 Latest Update 2022: CISCE has released the ICSE Class 10 Time Table for Semester 1 for the examinations 2022 on the official website.

The ICSE Class 10 subjects are strategically portrayed to help the students in a way to impart knowledge through “learning by enjoying”. The syllabus is divided into 3 groups. Group 1 consists of the compulsory subjects, Group 2 has a choice of picking any two subjects, and group 3 has an option of choosing any one subject from several other subjects. Check them out below

Chapter-1 Force

This chapter is a quite interesting and simple one where topics like turning forces, a moment of force, the center of gravity, uniform motion definition, its functionalities and properties, centripetal and centrifugal forces, equilibrium of bodies, couple and its properties, and problem application, etc are clearly explained with help of diagrams and exercise problems for better understanding.

Chapter-2 Work, Power, and Energy

The terms like work, energy, power, etc are explained with their definitions, properties, and applications, various types of energies like heat energy, thermal energy, mechanical energy, etc are discussed in detail here. Also, other important topics like the principle of conservation of energy, conversion of one form of energy to another, kinetic and potential energy, etc are clearly explained with the help of problems and diagrams for better understanding.

Chapter-3 Machines

This chapter explains topics like the principle of machine, levers and their types, pulley and its types, terms like velocity ratio, efficiency, mechanical advantage, and their relations between them are clearly explained in this chapter.

Chapter-4 Refraction of Light at Plane Surfaces

This chapter is a very important and experimental subject in the syllabus. The topics like the refraction of light using triangular prisms and also explaining how the objects seem to bend or float in water, total internal reflection, its definition and properties, various applications, etc are discussed in detail.

Chapter-5 Refraction through a Lens

The concept of lenses i.e., converging and diverging, image formation, magnifying glass, determining the location of images are done through ray diagrams, lens formula, linear magnification, power of a lens, and applications of lenses, etc are a few topics covered in this chapter.

Chapter-6 Spectrum

This chapter is an interesting and experimental unit where topics like dispersion of white light through prism and formation the of the spectrum, the difference between ultraviolet, visible, infrared radiations, scattering of light, electromagnetic spectrum, wavelength, and frequency range, etc are the various important topics covered in this chapter.

Chapter-7 Sound

This chapter is another important and high-priority unit from an examination point of view. The topics like definition, properties of sound, a reflection of sound waves, echoes, simple and basic problems on echoes, etc are discussed in detail. Also, other topics like definition and types of vibrations, resonance, terms like loudness, pitch and quality of sound, etc are the topics covered in this chapter and are explained with the help of problems for better understanding.

Chapter-8 Current Electricity

This chapter is a very vast and important unit where topics like Ohm’s law, current, household circuits, terms like potential difference, resistance, etc are covered, followed by problems and experiments for good practice purposes. Other important topics like superconductors, electromotive force, the terminal voltage of a cell, power rating of common electrical appliances, electrical energy, and its measurement, etc are also discussed here in detail by conducting experiments if need be.

Chapter-9 Household Circuits

The topics like power transmission and distribution, house wiring, terms like switches, fuses, earthing, socket, high tension wires, staircase wiring, etc are discussed in detail with the help of diagrams and experiments for better understanding and to make the class lively and interesting.

Chapter-10 Electro-Magnetism

The topics like a magnetic field, its definition, properties, rules to finding the direction, current in the loop, electromagnet, permanent magnet, simple DC motor, AC generator, faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction, household supplies with its frequencies, etc are a few of the important topics covered in this chapter.

Chapter-11 Calorimetry

This chapter covers topics like calorimetry, its definition, and importance, terms like specific heat capacity, the principle of the method of mixtures, latent heat, etc are discussed in detail followed by problems for better understanding.

Chapter-12 Radioactivity

This is another small chapter that is simple and easy to understand. Topics like radioactivity, changes in the nucleus, background radiation, nuclear fission and fusion, properties of alpha, beta, and gamma radiations and safety precautions, etc are covered here followed by diagrams and problems for better understanding purposes.
