CLASS 6th CBSE SCIENCE SYLLABUS OVERVIEW:

The CBSE standard is quite perfect for students as it covers all basic to advanced topics in detail. NCERT materials are the best resource for securing good scores in examinations.

For the 6th standard, Science is a combination of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, with a total of 16 chapters. These chapters contain sub-chapters within them.

Let’s take a glance at each of them below:

CHAPTER-1:   Food: Where Does it Come From?

As the name suggests, this chapter revolves around food and gives detailed information on it. The subchapters are:

  •  Food Variety
  • Food Materials and Sources
  • Plant Parts and Animal Products as Food
  • Plant parts as food
  • What do Animals Eat?

You see, learning about food resources, various plant and animal food, the meaning of herbivorous, carnivorous, omnivorous and explaining with good examples and conducting activities and making charts, creates interest in students.

CHAPTER-2:  Components of Food

 Here, this chapter is the extension of chapter one followed by few other important topics. The subchapters are:

  • What do Different Food Items Contain?
  • What do Various Nutrients do For Our Body?
  • Balanced Diet
  • Deficiency Diseases

This gives quite a detailed understanding of the different nutrients and minerals in food, the correct quality, and the quantity of food that need to be taken for better growth and development. Also the consequences for not taking proper and timely food due to which there are many diseases caused, and also what is meant by a balanced diet. By conducting fun quizzes on this chapter, students can learn the subject and remember it well.

CHAPTER-3  Fibre to Fabric:

In this chapter, a variety of clothing materials, how are they made, the process of preparing and producing those raw cloth materials into fine and neatly stitched. The subchapters are:

  • Variety in Fabrics
  • Fiber
  • Some Plant Fibres
  • Spinning Cotton Yarn
  • Yarn to Fabric
  • History of clothing material

Apart from the various fabric materials, students get to learn about different methods to make clothes, like, Knitting, Weaving, etc, where each of them is followed by an activity. Just for a better understanding for the students.

CHAPTER-4  Sorting Materials and Groups:

 This chapter is one of the interesting and practical topics, due to which there are many activities involved after every topic. The subchapters are:

  •  Objects around us
  • Properties of materials

It talks about various objects around us and their behavioral properties. Meaning of transparent, translucent, and opaque bodies and their differences explained with few live examples.

CHAPTER-5  Separation of Substances:

This chapter discusses the different methods used for separating substances and why it needs to be done. This has only one subchapter:

Methods of separation followed with activities, few examples, exercises for a keen understanding. Also discusses the solvable and unsolvable substances in brief.

CHAPTER-6  Changes Around Us:

This chapter requires more thought processes and increases the capability to build a good practical approach. The subchapters are:

  • Can all changes always be reversed?
  • Could there be other ways to bring a change?

It talks about various processes which can be reversed or not without affecting any other results. Like the change of batter to idli, is this process reversible or not. There are many activities and exercises followed with each topic.

CHAPTER-7  Getting to Know Plants:

This chapter discusses the variety of plants, their behavioral factors, and different parts of plants with their functions. The subchapters are:

  • Herbs, Shrubs, and Trees
  • Stem
  • Leaf
  • Root
  • Flower

All the brief introduction about how plants grow, produce, and meaning of bushes, herbs, creepers, etc, followed with activities and live example seminars to create a fun and interactive study environment.

CHAPTER-8  Body Movement:

This chapter gives a detailed picture of the different body movements, how the joints, ball sockets play an important role in hand and leg movements. The subchapters are:

  • Human Body and Its Movements
  • Gait of Animals

This topic discusses the different body movements in small creatures and their joint functions and how different their skeleton structure is designed when compared with human beings. Each topic is followed by an interactive activity that makes the class more lively and fun.

CHAPTER-9: The Living Organisms and Their Surroundings:

 This chapter teaches the various places where plants, animals live and build their homes. The subchapters in this are:

  • Organisms and The Surroundings Where They Live
  • Habitat and adaptation
  • A journey through different habitats
  • Characteristics of  organisms

With a pictorial representation of each topic, there are activities explaining the meaning of habitat, types of habitat, food habits, and their growth and development in those regions.

CHAPTER- 10:  Motion and Measurement of Distances:

 This chapter is another important and practical topic in the syllabus. A clear description is given about different modes of transportation, their history, and their usage in day-to-day activities around the world. The subchapters are:

  • Story of transport
  • How wide is this desk?
  • Some measurements
  • Standard Units of Measurements
  • Correct Measurement of Length
  • Measuring the length of a curved line
  • Moving things around us
  • Types of motion

Apart from transportation, how measurements are taken, tools used to measure objects, units to calculate distance, finding the length and width of particular things, tricks to measure curved objects like thread, etc, types of motions and how they are caused followed with excellent examples for better understanding.

CHAPTER-11  Light, Shadows, and Reflections:

This chapter is a big and crucial topic in the syllabus and the weightage of it is also more. When compared to other topics this unit gets repeated in the next classes with deeper content. If it’s not clear now, it becomes difficult in the long term ahead. The subchapters are:

  • Transparent, opaque, and translucent objects
  • What exactly are shadows?
  • A pinhole camera
  • Mirrors and reflection

The nature of various objects and how they can be made artificially are explained here with a bunch of activities. Meaning of shadows & reflection and their formation, handmade pinhole camera, etc, followed with a few exercises and assignments.

CHAPTER-12  Electricity and Circuits:

Here, the topics like a basic model of a circuit and the required equipment needed to light a bulb are covered explaining with a logical approach. The subchapters are:

  • Electric cell
  • A bulb connected to an electric cell
  • An electric circuit
  • Electric switch
  • Electric conductors and insulators

The positive and negative sides of an electric battery cell, the meaning of conductors, insulators, and their difference with suitable examples are described well with experimental activities and pictorial representations.

CHAPTER-13  Fun with Magnets:

Starting with the invention of magnets, poles of magnets and their usage are covered in this chapter.  The subchapters are:

  • Magnetic an
    d non-magnetic materials
  • Poles of magnet
  • Finding directions
  • Make your own magnet
  • Attraction and repulsion between magnets

List of magnetic and non-magnetic objects, how to differentiate them, making an artificial magnet, meaning of attraction and repulsion are neatly explained with diagrams and conducting interactive activities.

CHAPTER-14  Water:

The water chapter is one of the favorite units of students. As the standard increases, the number of topics also increases. Beginning with a basic introduction, water resources, water cycles are a few of many topics covered under this chapter. The sub-chapters are:

  • How much water do we use?
  • Where do we get water from?
  • Water cycle
  • Back to the oceans
  • What if it rains heavily?
  • What happens when it does not rain for a long period?
  • How can we conserve water?
  • Rainwater harvesting

Also, tips to follow when a drought is caused, reasons to conserve rainwater, and methods to follow to increase the rainfall cms for better and healthy livelihood. As this is an exclusive theory chapter, conducting frequent quizzes.

CHAPTER-15   Air Around Us:

The Air chapter is another topic that is carried forward almost every year. This is another easy, and theory-based chapter that covers topics like the composition of air, different air resources, etc. The subchapters are:

  • Is air present everywhere around us?
  • What is air made up of?
  • How does oxygen become available to animals and plants living in water and sons?
  • How is the oxygen in the atmosphere replaced?

What are pollutants of air, oxygen availability, and sources to increase the oxygen level in the atmosphere followed by activities and examples for a deeper and better understanding.

CHAPTER-16  Garbage In, Garbage Out:

This chapter is another important and interesting unit that covers much useful and detailed information. The subchapters are:

  • Dealing with Garbage
  • Vermicomposting
  • Think and Throw
  • Recycling of Paper
  • Plastics boon or a curse?

As taking care of garbage is an important activity in our daily routine, differentiating between dry and wet garbage, segregating accordingly, banning plastic concept, more usage of paper, and regular recycling of paper are few topics that are covered in this chapter, along with a set of assignments and activities to be followed in day to day life.
